About the Author

Shanon Patel BDS, MSc, MClinDent, MFDS RCS (Eng), MRD (Endo) RCS (Edin)
Shanon divides his time between working in specialist practice in central London, and teaching future Specialist Endodontists in the Endodontic Postgraduate Unit at King's College London. In 2006 he was the first Endodontist in the UK to routinely use Cone Beam Computed Tomography for the management of endodontic problems. At present Shanon is also carrying out a PhD assessing how specialised imaging techniques can improve the management of patients requiring Endodontic treatment.
He has published over 40 papers in peer reviewed scientific journals, and also co-edited 2 undergraduate textbooks 'The Principles of Endodontics' (Oxford University Press) and 'Pitt Ford's Problem Based Learning in Endodontics' (Wiley-Blackwell). He is frequently asked to lecture on all aspects of Endodontics. He has also served on the council of the British Endodontic Society.

Justin J. Barnes BSc, BDS, MFDS RCPS (Glasg), MClinDent (Endo), MRD (Endo) RCS (Edin)
Justin studied Anatomy and Dentistry at Queen's University Belfast, graduating in 2004. He worked in general dental practice for a year as a vocational dental practitioner. He then worked for two years as a senior house officer in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Restorative Dentistry at the Royal Victoria Hospitals, Belfast and in the emergency dental services. Justin completed his specialist training in Endodontology at King's College London Dental Institute in 2010.
Justin offers a specialist endodontic service at referral only clinics in Northern Ireland. He also teaches undergraduate dental students at the Centre for Dental Education, Queen's University Belfast. Justin has published several papers in peer reviewed journals and he delivers postgraduate endodontic educational courses for dentists.

The Admiral with the last missiles wins

While books on naval strategy abound, information on just how a modern naval conflict would be fought in the age of missiles is harder to find. While this book is not an integrated and comprehensive text on the subject, it does piece together enough disparate articles to allow one to get the outlines.

One piece is illuminating - a fictional story of an admiral tasked to suppress a Turkish attack on Greece in the Aegean Sea but without much carrier or air support. With just missiles, the bottom line, according to the author is, the fleet with the last missiles wins.

A good introduction to the current problems our sailors face. Makes we wish for more though.

When it comes to facing old age, writes Athill, there are no lessons to be learnt, no discoveries to be made, no solutions to offer. As the acclaimed British memoirist (who wrote about her experiences as a book editor in Stet) pushes past 90, she realizes that there is not much on record on falling away and resolves to set down some of her observations. She is bluntly unconcerned with conventional wisdom, unapologetically recounting her extended role as the Other Woman in her companion's prior marriage—then explaining how he didn't move in with her until after they'd stopped having sex, which is why it was no big deal for her to invite his next mistress to move in with them to save expenses. She is equally frank in discussing how, as their life turns sad and boring, she copes with his declining health, just as she cared for her mother in her final years. Firmly resolute that no afterlife awaits her, Athill finds just enough optimism in this world to keep her reflections from slipping into morbidity—she may not offer much comfort, but it's a bracing read. Athill spent more than fifty years editing writers including Philip Roth, Norman Mailer, Jean Rhys, and V. S. Naipaul. In later life, she "had the luck to discover" that she could write; her book-world memoir, "Stet," appeared when she was eighty-three. Now, at ninety-one, she offers a spry dispatch on the condition of being elderly, having realized that copious literature describes the experience of youth, "but there is not much on record about falling away." Her perspective is both remorseless and tender as she considers the waning of her sexual desire, the sharpening of her atheist resolve, her increasing preference for nonfiction rather than novels ("I no longer feel the need to ponder human relationships . . . but I do still want to be fed facts"), and the truth that, even in her advanced state, much of her time is taken up with caring for those still older. The achievement of Athill's work is its refusal to reduce the specificities of her captivating life to homilies about wisdom.

Somewhere Towards the End isn't the first book to describe in detail the process of "falling away," the author's apt euphemism for the decline one experiences in old age. Critics compare Athill's memoir to John Bayley's Elegy for Iris and Nora Ephron's I Feel Bad About My Neck, or the fiction of Philip Roth, Alice Munro, and John Updike. But Athill writes with a nothing-to-lose attitude that brings dignity to a process so often marked by the inevitable slowing of the mind and the deterioration of the body. This is a remarkable memoir, not the least for its honest approach to the end of life. I NEED MANY MORE THAN 5 STARS FOR THIS BOOK.

When was the last time you encountered someone new and the word 'wisdom' popped into your head? Not very often lately? Me neither. Until last week. I read right through this book, "Somewhere Towards the End," as soon as I finished reading right through Diana Athill's earlier book, "Stet."

I bought "Stet" because it was the memoir of a superb book editor, a job I had done once myself, though not superbly. She had been one of the founders of a small, elite British house and worked with Mailer, Vidal, and Updike to name but three of their stable.

I bought "Somewhere Towards The End" because I was wondering what it is like to be old. I knew about arthritis, wrinkles and a sense of irrelevance. Who doesn't? I had been wondering if there was anything more appealing to be said for it. Diana Athill was close to 90 when she wrote this book, and the answer she personifies is 'Yes, there is.'

You see from the first page that she herself is a wonderful writer, a very unusual writer, and she must have been hell on wheels as an editor. (Not in the way you may be thinking though; Gordon Liss she is not. Her insights are penetrating, but her touch is very light., just short of self- effacing.) She embodies more than a few paradoxes. She she did not bring the kind of clear, rational insights to her own personal and financial life that she invested in her authors' books. She is quite frank about it, but never self-pitying. Fortunately for the reader, she made interesting mistakes with interesting people. One of the things that charmed and fascinated me is how lucidly and candidly she writes about her misadventures.

One minute she seems quite eccentric and the next you may realize that you've done the same thing for the same reason but never quite admitted the latter to yourself. She is extremely discrete about the affairs of others but not at all politically correct about her own sexual history. Nor does she romanticize the emotional history that went along with it. And outlives it.

I hope I have done this book and this writer justice. She has had a real impact on the way I look at some things, and I hope many others will get the same opportunity.

Well written

A very well written work, part memoir, part description of her current life in old age. Satisfies the curiosity in some of us Boomers about what it is like to be in late old age.

She is an interesting person, being very unlike most women- many lovers, never married or had children, and (almost) never missing those things. Nevertheless ended up in a wife-like caring role for her companion of over forty years (but lover for only eight), and her reasons for taking on that role willingly illuminate the essentials of strong human bonds.

I couldn't put the book down. Excellent.

An insightful author comes to grips with what's over the hill

I first became acquainted with the writing of Diana Athill in "Stet," her insider's look at her 50+ years of working with the acclaimed British publisher Andre Deutsch and editing the writings of Jean Rhys, V. S. Naipul, Philip Roth, Norman Mailer and other now-famous authors.

In "Somewhere Towards the End," Athill approaches the onset of her nineties with an amusing and deeply personal memoir about the ups and downs of old age.

Athill's insights into what's likely to lie over the hill intrigue me, especially when they direct my sights to aspects of growing old I'd not thought much about, if at all. For example, just when you reach that age where you've promised yourself you'd give up the car keys, your feet give out. Or the happy discovery that you've still got it in you to learn how to become good at something entirely new and unrelated to what you'd made a career of. Or that you'd finally reached the age where it's permissible to be a curmudgeon. Or belatedly come to the realization that the good family genes you'd lucked into and always figured would give you a good shot at living long and then leaving this world without much of a fuss almost always come with a deeply devoted daughter attached to smooth the way (a key ingredient she lacks, as do I. Oops. )

As I write this, Diana Athill's in her mid 90s and I'm looking forward to her next book "Letters to a Friend," which is getting excellent reviews in Britain, but is not yet available here. In the meantime, I recommend her 45-minute 2004 interview on the BBC's "Desert Island Discs". I've inserted a link in the comment below.

Rex Brynen is professor of political science at McGill University. His numerous publications on the Middle East include A Very Political Economy: Peacebuilding and Foreign Aid in the West Bank and Gaza and, as co-editor, the two-volume Political Liberalization and Democratization in the Arab World . Pete W. Moore is associate professor of political science at Case Western Reserve University. He is author of Doing Business in the Middle East: Politics and Economic Crisis in Jordan and Kuwait . Bassel F. Salloukh is associate professor of political science at the Lebanese American University in Beirut. He is co-author of Mapping the Political Landscape: An Introduction to Political Science and co-editor of Persistent Permeability: Regionalism, Localism, and Globalization in the Middle East . Marie-Joelle Zahar is associate professor of political science at the University of Montreal. She is co-editor of Intra-State Conflict, Government and Security: Dilemmas of Deterrence and Assurance.

An Excellent Resource for Tasty Dumplings

When I signed up to review this book for NetGalley, I took my job seriously. I downloaded the cookbook, and set out to cook as many of the recipes as I could with the help of my guy--the real chef in the family. He and I have been cooking dumplings for years, so we were pretty sure there wasn't anything we could learn from this book beyond a few new filling recipes.

Boy, were we wrong.

First, we learned the importance of a good wrapper and the differences between the different styles. Although the author offers a recommendation for his preferred wrapper, we tried a few different styles and thicknesses and came up with the best wrapper available in our area--and it wasn't the one recommended by the cookbook. If you have a chance, and if you aren't going to make your own wrapper, we suggest you pick up the PF Select Shanghai-style wrappers for all of your dumplings. You won't be disappointed. If you can't find PF Select, the author's suggestion of Grand Marguis Shanghai style is good too, but they'll be a bit more doughy.

Second, we learned new folding styles for dumplings beyond the traditional half-moon.

Third, Kenny Lao has a method for cooking dumplings that is absolutely fantastic. In the past, we've fried them and we've steamed them, but his treatment gives you a potsticker that is the best of both worlds and is easy. It's also a great method for making a ton of dumplings for a crowd.

Fourth, we were skeptical of Lao's assertion that freezing the dumplings would yield excellent results. After freezing dumplings based on Lao's instructions, we have taken to making and freezing dumplings once a month, and we will never return to frozen grocery store dumplings again. There is absolutely no comparison.

Finally, there are the recipes. We tried four different recipes for fillings, two different soups, many of the dipping sauces, and three of the side dishes. All were quite tasty, and we definitely have our favorites.

Overall, this is a great cookbook. The layout is not overwhelming, the recipes are great, and the "how to" sections are clear. Plus, it has a variety of recipes that will appeal to cooks of all skill levels.

We have a lot of detailed notes about specific recipes, but that might be going a bit overboard for this review. Hit me up if you're interested!

We've now bought a copy of this cookbook for ourselves, and we'll be getting additional copies for friends. We definitely enjoyed our first attempt at cookbook reviewing, and we hope to do many more!

Hey There, Dumpling

First a slight confession. I love dumplings. I adore them. I could fall asleep in a bed of them after taking an ambien so I would wake up to a full stomach and clean set of sheets.

Second a slighter larger confession. I have not made my own wrappers from this book yet. I've gone the easy route of the nice solid stack from my local Asian market. But I will. I do plan on it. Some day.

Lao provides a wonderful primer on the matter that goes well beyond dumplings. I love the set up in the book that provides wonderful visuals in how to go about setting up a dumpling friendly kitchen. The listing of tools and ingredient as well as pictures to make sure there is no mistake (I actually greatly appreciate that the author makes no bones about communicating what he knows -- as opposed to any assumptions of what he thinks I should already know -- here it works wonderfully) in what I need to have ready should I want to make any of the delights he provides recipes and careful detailed instructions for.

I love the combination of familiar flavors placed in a dumpling. the Chicken and Thai basil was a huge hit. As was the Lamb and Cumin, the spicy Beef and Shiso and the chicken saag.

Fun sauces that mean you can break out a bag of your favorite already made frozen dumplings and still feel like you did your own bit. There is even a great chart that explores combining dumplings with sauces that just typing about it makes my stomach growl.

Lao goes the full soup to nuts approach with this, so not just the familiar dumplings and their immediate cousin, the bun. He also tackles noodles and salads and of course the aforementioned soups. There are drinks and desserts that were also a nice twist on some familiar concepts that I still haven't tried (I'm still working up to my own dough here and haven't even considered moving up to making my own noodles).

This is a great book for those wanting to expand their love of the dumpling to more than ordering them from the take out menu. Whether you want to simply trigger your appetite, expand your frozen dumpling repertoire to including some fresh and interesting new dipping sauces, take the leap to filling, folding and cooking your own, all the way to doing everything yourself, this is the book for you.

And a lot of fun to make

I’ve had dumplings and steamed buns for two days straight now, and I still want more! These recipes are delicious! And a lot of fun to make. A big part of Mr. Lao’s book is urging you to get together with friends and family to make his recipes, and I can assure you, it is just as much fun as he says!

The very first thing you notice about this book is Mr. Lao’s enthusiasm! His passion for life, family, and food – especially dumplings – spills from each page, and it is impossible not to get excited as you read! You will be eager to dive in and make the recipes. This was something that stuck with me, as often I have either found dry cookbooks that are just a recitation of ingredients, or books that are more narrative with a few recipes thrown in. Both initially interest me, but after a few uses, they sit untouched on the shelf. However, Mr. Lao’s book reminds me of meals with friends and family, where “delicious, how did you make that?” and “I’ll write the recipe down for you” are passed around the table as often as the serving dish. Actual excitement for sharing the food! I was very impressed.

What sold me, as any good cookbook should do, was the great, mouth-watering pictures of the dishes! Be forewarned, they will most likely make you hungry. And as Mr. Lao’s writing style is to encourage the reader and explain all the ways that you CAN do it, all factors combine to stoke the reader’s eagerness to cook! (And subsequently, eat!)

Speaking of pictures, as we made our different dough for the buns and dumplings, I was often asked if it looked right. Mr. Lao gives great description, but no pictures, of the basics, which would have been helpful. His personalized notes and descriptions were of great help, however, so our attempts still turned out very tasty!

There are personal touches, comments, and drawings all throughout the book, which are both helpful and fun. For example, many help the reader get a sense of what sort of flavors are in a dish, and who might like or dislike it. I really appreciated those when choosing which recipes to do with different groups of friends.

I used the e-book version and found the links within the recipes to different places in the book to be very helpful. For those using the print edition, I would recommend a good cookbook stand with bookmarks on different recipes, as there is a lot of turning back and forth from dough, to filling, to dip.

Highly recommended, and on my Great Gifts to Give list!
