The 101st Airborne Division battled to survive a fierce enemy, Vietnamization and a media blackout. . . From March 12 to July 23, 1970, the 101st Airborne Division battled to hold a mountaintop firebase just west of the A Shau Valley in a time when Richard Nixon's Vietnamization was pulling troops from Vietnam. The four-and-a-half month battle claimed over a hundred American lives and featured one of the Army's largest air evacuations in history. Accessible only by helicopter, Firebase Ripcord and the surrounding triple-canopy jungle was rife with well-trained, well-equipped soldiers from the North Vietnamese Army. Sent out to find the enemy, firefights mounted until a siege of the firebase erupted and ran throughout July. Casualties escalated and a decision had to be made. Veterans of Ripcord have lived in the shadows for decades. Remembering Firebase Ripcord features the recollections of some 200 veterans of the battle. Thanks to a media blackout that stemmed from the carnage the 101st suffered just months prior at Dong Ap Bia (Hamburger Hill), many of these stories lived only in the hearts and minds of those who were there. To this day, Ripcord veterans meet by the hundreds annually. They share a unique bond that could only have been formed in the heat of fierce combat half a world away from home during a time that much of America had turned its back on the soldiers still charged with fighting a fierce enemy. Fueled by a desire to clear misconceptions and the wide array of misreporting that arose during the Vietnam era, Brady delved headlong into research associated with Remembering Firebase Ripcord in 2013.

A confused and muddled oral history
By Patrick D. Mahaney
There are two other books that pre-dated this publication - 'Ripcord' by Ken Nolan and 'Hell on a Hilltop' by retired MG Harrison - and both are significantly better written than this publication. Remembering Firebase Ripcord is written as a sort of unstructured oral history. It is hard to follow the story, except the material is written chronologically, nearly day by day, but without reference to relationship to the overall plan of action. There are no maps and very few photos, except a few provided by the participants. There is a seeming incoherence to the overall book except that it was a savage battle and significant loss of life was inflicted on the NVA but the losses inflicted on the 101 forces were nearly grievous. The 2/506 infantry primarily, as well as 1/506 and 3/187 infantry battalions and the 2/17 Cavalry, all suffered significant losses. The battalion commander of 2/506, LTC Andre Lucas, was killed on the last day of the battle during the evacuation effort off Firebase Ripcord.

What detracts mostly is the lack of balance - we are offered very little information about LTC Lucas, the senior officer on the firebase (although Nolan's book goes into far greater detail and portrays Lucas in an unfavorable light as a self-serving careerist looking for another promotion upward); we know little about the overall plan of action and how the ground tactical plan supported the division's overall effort. There was a nasty, bloody battle fought in the Au Shau Valley in Vietnam in the spring-summer of 1970 that nearly decimated an entire infantry battalion and part of the entire third brigade 101st Airborne (Airmobile), and the U.S. Army has never 'come clean' with the official story, but to get the better picture, you will need to read Nolan's work which is very well written and explanatory as well as Harrison's work, while not as well written, but factual and detailed.

Nolan's aren't great, but at least it gives you some idea ...
By JWW
Just an oral history; as such, I would rate it 4 stars. HOWEVER Ripcord deserves more. PLEASE read Keith Nolan's Ripcord, Screaming Eagles Under Siege- it has most of the stories Brady includes, but it also has vital 3 things Remembering lacks 1. THEME: rather than a list of stories, Ripcord explains all facets of the campaign; why it was fought, what went wrong and the lack of support from the folks in Saigon. A such, it is a superb retelling. 2. MAPS: Nolan's aren't great, but at least it gives you some idea of where all the players are at, and a sense of terrain. 3 AN EDITOR: Brady needed an editor; the book is full of typos, misspelling, grammatical errors, and redundant sections. Don't waste $ on Remembering, Nolan has it all!

Very Good Read about a tough Battle
By Gary E. Earls
Having served with several pilots who help evacuate Ripcord, I was interested in this point of view. I found this book to be an excellent read about a very tough battle. Brady has done a lot of research but fails to note the dates when he talked to different individuals. A very good read.
