Barnburner (Jennifer Pierce Maine Mystery Book 1), by Sharon Lee

"With obvious affection, Sharon Lee introduces us to Wimsy, Maine, where a timeless and timely contemporary mystery leads us and transplanted flatlander Jen Pierce into a world containing witches, internet bulletin boards, an antique electric railroad, and murder--a world built with the same attention to character, story, and setting that we have long expected in the Liaden Universe(R) books. Like all of her books, this one's a keeper. . ." -- Modean Moon, author of RWA Rita award winner The Covenant

Retro mystery with a touch of the fantastic - slight spoilers
By Ajousch
First posted on my GoodReads account about the Fictionwise ebook edition.

"I really enjoyed this glimpse into life in a small town in Maine, which I feel fairly confident is life-like as the author and her husband have been living there for a few years now.

It's also a look at the time of computer bulletin boards as the only lifeline to the outside for computer geeks and a time when a mobile phone was an advanced machine and quite cumbersome.

The heroine herself is a grown-up woman nursing the physical and mental wounds of her past, and I'd say the story is as much about her integrating more into the small town community that she happened to inherit a house in, as it is about the murder mystery. There's a slight touch of the otherworldly via a very friendly witch's vision - necessary to the fast resolution (the book is 175 pages on my e-reader when I set the standard font size at 12 points).

The real appeal is the description of the town and its inhabitants, though - everyone I met is a real personality. My favourites are Harry, the friend of the aunt that Jennifer has inherited the home from, Jasper the cat, Marian the 13-year-old computer geek girl, the midwife cum herbal specialist cum witch that sells Jennifer some tea for her migraines and the bulletin board sysop.

I don't usually read mysteries, so I can't judge the story on that basis. But if you've enjoyed the author's voice and especially if you have enjoyed her recent Carousel Tides, this would be a great addition (if without the overt magic) to her world set in Maine."

Captivating storytelling
By DebraDownSth
I'll start with the cons.

The book is short. It could well have been 50 percent longer and felt more like a real book than a novella. That said, it didn't have a feeling of lacking anything, or absolutely needing more. The only detail left out was a mysterious life-ending disorder. I suppose that not naming it wasn't huge, but it felt like a dodge. Unfortunately, the writer puts in no fluff, you don't skim, you want to read every word. I say unfortunately because it is hard to put down, thus ending faster. Fortunately, there is another book in the series, Gunshy, which I delayed buying until I read this one. I just bought it so I can continue with these characters.

The book is set in 1989, old computer technology that many may be unfamiliar with. Fortunately the writer makes the information clear and in fact nostalgic for those of us who were on old bulletin boards.

That a police official writes a ticket/warning for driving fast when the driver's life is threatened could be the random power-trip personality. That 2 such people do the same thing left me with hoping it is bad writing, not indicative of actual police the writer is familiar with or representative of Maine police. However, it is the only part of the entire book that doesn't ring true.

If you are looking for some intricate detective work where the reader is given massive clues and must use great thought to figure out who-done-it, with the author then either rewarding you for superior intellect in figuring it out -- or slapping you in the face for missing obscure info and making someone else the person, this isn't that type of mystery. It is a mystery, with clues that aren't so obvious that only one possible culprit exists, nor so twisty that anyone could have done it. It is mostly about people and relationships and community and the mystery is part of it, not the whole. And it is very satisfying.

Lee has an ability to create a connection with all her characters. Unlike stories where you get a feeling for a main character and perhaps a few others, Lee inhabits the book with enough description and views that each person has a real feel to them. And often you care a great deal about what happens to them, whether you are hoping for good or bad. She has similar ability with locations, giving enough detail to allow visualization but not so much you have no room to imagine or no longer care. Story telling at its finest.

Similar to Sharon Lee's other books that are set in the state of Maine. Interesting side characters, something she always does very well.
