Quite comprehensive

This is a thick book with a lot of content. The authors of every chapter are respected experts in their fields. It is difficult to use the whole book, but it speaks to the scope and diversity of political psychology as a field that transcends traditional academic boundaries of political science, psychology, communications, and sociology. While several years old now, most of the reviews remain comprehensive and all are well-written.

Update (Feb 2011): I understand a second edition is in the works, but I'm not sure when it will be published.

The best starting point for those interested in political psychology

Up to now I perused through the pages and read on some hot topics that are discussed in the field of political psychology today.

My intention, as a Masters student in Social Psychology, is to see if this book serves as a good basis for a possible Ph.D later on, as the university in the Netherlands where I'm currently studying does not present a similar course. This well written book has served as a good source of inspiration on which one would want to delve further in this interesting field. If there is anyone out there with similar interests, I would strongly advise you to get hold of this book. On the surface it looks intimidating and hard to wrestle through, but is written very comprehensively and is an easy and (very) intersting read.

After centuries of oversight, several unheralded female inventors are here chronicled by Vare (freelance journalist/biographer) and Ptacek (former editor of Rock magazine). Over 100 brief biographies sketch the conditions prompting certain discoveries: for example, serendipity factored in the creation of toll-house cookies. The specter of scandal pervades this collection as, for one, Eli Whitney is exposed for defrauding Catherine Littlefield Greene of fame and fortune as designer of the cotton gin. Other inspirational accounts range from the development of household gadgets (Margaret Knight's brown paper bags), to industrial and scientific discoveries (Lise Meitner's theory of nuclear fission). This "herstory" refutes the historical contention that the abstract ". . . is not the province of women." Three appendixes provide additional information about patents. Photos not seen by PW.

With a catchy title and the fascination of invention built-in, this is the sort of volume that YAs will pick up, flip through, and find engrossing. Women inventors, both serious and frivolous, are laudedthe authors' theme is to give credit to women whose creative talents have been unknown or largely ignored. A mix of professional and humorous achievements with drawings, diagrams, and photographs (including one of a damsel in a corset who later died of asphyxiation) make the book journalistically intriguing. Further encouragement to future inventors is found in the foreword as well as in final appendix, which provides the address of the U.S. Patent Office and directions on how to file for a patent. Although it is not a book to be read cover to cover, amusement and feminist views aside, it would certainly provide lesser-known biographical material and be a source for unusual science facts. Although all periods are covered, most of the entries are for 20th-century women, e.g., Helena Rubinstein, Marie Curie, and Rosalyn Yalow. Brief biographical information is given along with a chatty description of the invention. "Unsung heroines" are those whose ideas were stolen or appropriated by more prominent men. A must have book for all libraries

This book is an excellent source of information about the contribution women have made to our society. As a Middle School science teacher, I find that most of my students assume that inventions are made by only men. They are amazed to learn that women have invented many things, and many of the things we use on a daily basis. I use this book so much that my copy needs to be replaced.

An Inspiration for all women with an idea!

This book is an inspiration to anyone. A kick in the butt to women who are surrounded by un-empower-ers and naysayers who are determined to convince you how stupid your ideas are. The book tells you it's ok to have ideas and it's ok to have to try a few times to get the wing nuts tight. I recommend this book as a guide to anyone who wants to step out of the comfort zone and change the world!!! I credit Ethlie Ann Vare with giving me the inspiration to make music, write scripts and books and patent cameras and re create myself as a cyber rock star at 60 years old! I encourage anyone who has stepped out and accomplished something extraordinary to make sure Ethlie Ann Vare hears about it! Great for research!

This book really helped me with a history term paper. It has very conprehensive information about women inventors who have been forgotten. I was amazed to see how far back it went with it's women inventors. A very useful and interesting book. I would reccomend it highly for both research and pleasure.

If you love skeletons and humor it's great for your Halloween kid. This was my favorite at as child and I have now bought if for several my friend's babies. Fun illustration and message. Written in England so a British voice.

One of the all time great read-along books for ages 5 - 8. Every kid loves to poke fun at adults
and the little skeleton is definitely in the "driver's seat" as the duo make decisions for a fun night out.

Deeply theoretical take on public policy. Students of public policy should find this book to be very helpful.

A Decent Anthology.

As this is the first anthology of public policy writings I've read, I can't comment on the quality here as compared to other writings. What I can say (after reading about 80% of the essays) is that this is like most anthologies: thorough, varied, and very poorly organized.
The essays here range from everything from philosophy of public policy (Dahl's article) to the tidbits of implementation (Sabatier & Mazmanian's article); from the really well-written (Majone and Wildavsky) to real snoozers (Rubin). With all this variance, the one thing I didn't get is any conflict in views presented. I'm no expert, but I'm sure that public policy experts don't actually agree on as much as these contributors seem to. I can't help getting the feeling that the editors views are amply reflected in these pages.
The other complaint is lack of structure. In particular, the section on "The Players" is put after "Making Public Policy." In retrospect, this made much of the latter-mentioned section harder to understand. Of course, this is easily remedied. If you do buy this collection (and I would hesitatingly reccomend it) read section 3 before section 2.

Uneven - there is a better alternative

I agree with the previous reviewer. The anthology is good in principle. Too few students read the original texts. Too many are fed with more or less adequate second-hand versions of what different scholars are saying.
BUT:
- While this anthology contains many classics, there is also a lot of less influential, or totally outdated texts that you should not waste your time on
- A good anthology requires good synthesizing chapters to make it more than the sum of its parts. The introductory chapters in this one are too brief and not very thrilling.
- The texts are too short. You only get little snippets.
- Many texts feel outdated, while much of the current litterature is missing.
There is a MUCH better public policy anthology which meets all these requirements: Daniel C. McCool (1995) "Public Policy Theories, Models, and Concepts" Prentice Hall. I would recommend that book instead, no doubt. Better, longer, more relevant and up-to-date texts, and very good comments by the editor. Have a look at that book instead of this one!
