Classic Chinese operas and novels are Fang's principal sources; reportedly, these stories appear here in English for the first time. The plots tend to be more elaborate than those in similar collections, often involving not one but several twists of fate or reversals of fortune. A pronunciation guide and glossary at the end of the volume will help readers cope with the sprinkling of Chinese names and terms. Although the meanings of these words are not always clear from the context ("Mr. Yeh... picked up the ch'ien holder from the altar, drew out two ch'ien, and threw them on the ground"), their use fortifies the already strong ambiance. Grade 4-7?A collection of 10 Chinese stories derived from the history of the Warring States Period (770-221 B.C.E.) and from operatic versions of popular tales. Retellings are vivid, lively, and read aloud well. Many have a moral, and all are entertaining; some, like the eponymous story, are quite moving. "The Two Miss Peonys" has appeared in its Sino-Vietnamese version in Lynette Vuong's The Golden Carp (Lothrop, 1993). A list of sources with Fang's commentary is appended, including admission of any changes?in all but one case minor?to the original material. A pronunciation guide and glossary appear in the back of the book. In the former, the author explains with specious reasoning her misguided decision to use the antiquated, inaccurate Wade-Giles transcription for Chinese names and terms; even on its own terms, this guide leaves lots unexplained. Also, defining Chinese terms in a glossary instead of in context only impedes the narrative flow. The black-and-white illustrations?one per selection?are graceful, depicting widely different epochs with amazing accuracy. Now she has written down nine of those stories, whose origins are legends, novels, and operas hundreds of years old. Dramatic, humorous, and touching by turn, the stories often concern difficulties overcome by characters who are kind or clever or both. One amusing tale concerns a shopkeeper who demands justice when a poor man accidentally slops a foul-smelling liquid in front of his coat shop. The wise magistrate who happens by gives the merchant more justice than he had hoped for, and certainly more than he wanted. In another, a carp-fish spirit falls in love with a man, takes the form of a young woman, and gives up her immortality to become his bride. A full-page illustration (not seen) will accompany each of the nine stories. A pronunciation guide, glossary, and source notes are appended. A fine, flavorful collection of Chinese tales. Works well with a Middle School Ancient China Curriculum

This past year, it was suggested to me my the publisher of our 6th grade social studies textbook to have the students read the Ch'I-Lin purse in conjunction with our chapter on Ancient China. I cannot tell you how much my students loved this book. They are just wonderful. Of particular interest to my 6th grade girls was the story of the carp fish who gives up her immortality for love. I also have to confess, I really enjoyed this book myself and plan that in years to come, should I have a daughter, I will be reading this book to her.

A wonderful book for youngster

This book was given to my son as a Christmas gift last year and he didn't bother to read it at first. But once he started he couldn't put it down! The stories are very interesting and a Chinese friend told me these are the authentic Chinese stories, unlike some that were Americanized, she herself heard of these stories when she grew up.
Absolutely a good book for young adults.

How to celebrate a childs heritage.

As the mother of a daughter adopted from China I struggle with keeping her background alive in her day to day life. This is just one of many books I read to her at night to celebrate her homeland. Its very well written and easy to understand. She was adopted at three, so often she corrects my pronunciation, and it warms my heart !! I recomend this book to all families of chinese adoptees.

About the Author
Dr. Mike Troughton is Plastics Technology Manager at The Welding Institute (TWI), World Centre for Materials Joining Technology in Cambridge, UK. His main areas of expertise include the welding and NDT of plastics pipes, the testing of thermoplastics welds and the certification of plastics welding personnel, on which he has written over 20 technical papers.

He is chairman of the British Standards Institution Technical Committee PRI/80 (Welding of plastics), the European Welding Federation Working Group 'Plastics Welders,' the CSWIP Plastics Welder Certification Scheme Management Committee, and the Welding and Joining Society Polymers Technical Group. He is also vice-chairman of the American Welding Society subcommittee G1A (Hot gas and extrusion welding) and a member of AWS subcommittee B2F (Plastics welding qualification).

The volume is easy to understand for the non technical person. The joining and bonding recommendations are incorporate real world processes and include expected results. A very good volume for design engineering with non metals, adhesive suppliers, engineering plastics McGrath. Etc.

A delirious, lyrical, young woman's coming of age. Just brilliant.

This book is so many things. On the one hand the story itself is something of a puzzle. Part of the tension is in figuring out what exactly is going on. But it's also an historical story of US-Philippine relations, and thus a political one that has relevance when looking at the US's current foreign policy. At heart though, it's a young woman's coming of age but a devastating one in the end. Though a challenging, thought provoking story the prose itself is so fluid that I found myself quickly into the first quarter of the book. Highly recommended, particularly for fans of Curtis Sittenfeld, Nabokov, and Banville.

Engaging, fast-paced, fascinating read

While I previously knew next to nothing about Filipino history, Apostol's novel was enlightening and engrossing. The parallels of political unrest with the age-old unrest of teenage girlhood meshed perfectly to create a richly complex drama. Themes of memory and history (both stories we tell ourselves and each other) were particularly resonant, and it made me think of these in relation to ourselves, and what roles we are cast in those stories.

Fantastic

This slow-searing thriller is lyrical, inspired, and absorbing. Gun Dealers' Daughter is fairly representative of Gina Apostol's poetic, extremely well-crafted style. Her other works - particularly Bibliolepsy: A novel (Philippine writers series)(a book that is a lot harder to find but a great read) - have similar qualities, but read this one first for a sense of her top-notch writing. I started reading this book one morning and I could barely put it down.

About the Author

John Parker teaches African history at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. He specializes in the history of Ghana and is the author of Making the Town: Ga State and Society in Early Colonial Accra and (with Jean Allman) Tongnaab: The History of a West African God. He is currently researching a book on the history of death and burial in Ghana.

Richard Rathbone is Honorary Professor of History in the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, and Emeritus Professor in History at the School of Oriental and African Studies. Other books include Murder and Politics in Colonial Ghana and Nkrumah and the Chiefs.

Necessary background to understanding Africa

Like many of the OUP "Very Short Introduction" series, you can't really tell what the book is about from the title. This is not a survey of African history, but rather a survey of how historians, political leaders and others have interpreted African history. E.g., colonialists created an African history -- or pretended there wasn't one -- that would best serve the cause of colonialism. That is, if Africa is seen as a land of primitive, savage tribes, the colonial powers could defend their actions as just spreading civilization. Conversely, post-colonialists have often created a nationalistic view of African countries that did not exist prior to the European powers marking arbitary lines on their maps.

The authors take pains to note that any statement about Africa as a whole is likely an over-generalization. The history of the Congo area, for instance, is considerably different from that of South Africa. Yet, as diverse as the regions are, the authors assert that the concept of "Africa" shouldn't be abandoned.

The whole subject of African history is a difficult one for historians, or anyone, because of the lack of sources. What we know of African cities like Timbuktu is essentially what travelers wrote about them. Often, the African climate has worked to eradicate the records of what might have been there prior to 19th century European colonization. Even oral history is suspect, as oral histories are subject to change over time. This makes it difficult for those attempting to decolonize Africa to actually figure out what a particular African region was like prior to colonization. For once colonization began, the nature of the region might have changed drastically. For instance, the 1996 Rwanda genocide of the Hutu against the Tutsi is not, as depicted in Western media, a struggle between two tribes. The difference between the Hutu and the Tutsi -- genetically the same -- entirely stems from how these people were treated by German and Belgian colonialists, creating an artificial division between them that continued and worsened even after the Europeans were long gone. (It occurs to me as I write this, that this is somewhat similar to the aftermath of Ottoman colonization of Southern Slavs.)

But while African history can't escape concentrating on the effects of colonialism, the authors cover other areas, e.g., the participation of African states in the slave trade -- possibly as many slaves went East as went across the Atlantic, and many slaves were transferred internally only. African history can't be discussed without discussing the slave trade, but the authors warn that there was a lot going on at the time not related to the slave trade, so it's a mistake to think of Africa as a continent of victims.

History has always been more about interpretation than facts, and that's particularly true in the case of Africa.

If you plan on reading any African history, or just want to understand the background of current African political issues, this book will provide needed perspective.

African Studies Snob Meets Her Match

Appearance: True to its name, this is a small pocket sized book from Oxford with a good and sturdy thick cover.

Content: If you want a standard, linear progression of the African continent, you must walk away. This book is an small academic companion to african historical studies. Not intending to ACTUALLY speak on African history, the authors rather discuss the many problems, theories and experiences of scholars studying African history. It is an AMAZING read and it lifted the proverbial veil from my eyes. I have since gone on to deepen my knowledge of the academic study of history and its many quandries. A good read for any budding academic, geek, African Studies minor, major, student or interested persons.

Far more than a "short introduction"

This book is very, very good, a must read for anyone interested in Africa and African studies. The commenter who notes that this is not a superficial recounting of African chronological history is correct, but this is a good thing. In fact, the authors make the important point that such a superficial recounting of naive historical narrative is a total distortion of African history in all its magnitude and complexity. We're talking about entire continent here, with literally 1000s of ethnic groups and an almost equal number of languages. The complexity of African history is magnified by the fact that much of it has been told--and hence distorted--by outsiders, outsiders who share little understanding and empathy of the complex richness of African history. Hence the authors weave a fascinating narrative of both history and historiography in this volume, and they do this by demonstrating that African history requires such a self-reflective historiographical approach because of its unique nature. The book is well-written and for anyone interested in African history compelling reading; I read it in one long sitting. Highly recommended.
