The book goes on to explain how, as Malaysia develops new links with Indian Ocean countries, many of them Muslim countries, a new style trading network is being formed, a network with Islamic characteristics, which echoes Indian Ocean Islamic trading networks of earlier times. Interspersed with interesting methodological insights into the latest network, transnational and spatial theories, the book provides detailed case studies of Malaysia’s and Southeast Asia’s trade and numerous other links with Indonesia, Egypt, Zanzibar, Comoros and Central Asia, and concludes by assessing how Malaysia’s and ASEAN’s new style network is likely to develop and influence wider global networks. Written with a depth of knowledge reflective of the author’s many years of research throughout Asia, this book gives a real insight into how Malaysia’s mentalities, traditions and ways of thinking are being applied to its interactions with its immediate neighbours and the wider world.

About the Author
Richard Wolfson is Benjamin F. Wissler Professor of Physics at Middlebury College, where he also teaches environmental studies. He holds a BA from Swarthmore, an MS in environmental studies from the University of Michigan, and Ph.D. in physics from Dartmouth. His research involves solar astrophysics and terrestrial climate change. Wolfson’s books include introductory physics texts as well as Nuclear Choices: A Citizen’s Guide to Nuclear Technology (MIT Press 1993) and Simply Einstein: Relativity Demystified (W.W. Norton 2003). He has produced four video courses for The Teaching Company: Einstein’s Relativity and the Quantum Revolution: Modern Physics for Nonscientists (1995 & 1999); Energy and Climate: Science for Citizens in the Age of Global Warming (1996); Physics in Your Life (2004); and Earth’s Changing Climate (2007).

Darn near perfect

I'm reading this textbook for a graduate school class in environmental biology for educators. I have worked through the first 10 chapters and have completed most of the exercises, review questions, and research problems in each chapter.

So far, I think Dr. Wolfson has fairly, accurately, and thoroughly presented basic facts about humanity's use of energy, the consequences of that use, the alternatives currently available, or technologically possible, and the costs and benefits of both our current energy supplies and proposed alternatives.

Dr. Wolfson does not display any bias toward any particular view of climate change or energy use. He instead provides the student with the mathematical tools needed to quantitatively analyze a broad body of well documented facts.

My only criticism is a mild one. Dr. Wolfson does say that his text requires only high school level algebra skills. I think that is accurate. Anyone who did reasonably well in high school algebra should be able to follow the text.

However, I do wish that in the beginning chapters, as he worked through the conversions and calculations of power, energy, and work, his examples had been just a bit more mathematically detailed. I could follow his explanations, but having not needed to do any dimensional analysis for the last 30 years, I was a bit sketchy on keeping my factors and labels straight as I worked through his examples and then tried to do the exercises. In some of his examples, he implies the completion of steps that he assumes his readers already understand.

In others, he lays out mathematical solutions in a narrative form that is tough to follow, and while I was able to work through things like:

(1/5 Btu/h/ft^2/degF)(1000ft^2)(70degF -45degF)= 5000 Btu/h

It would have been a bit easier to follow if it had been laid out more clearly in factor/label format, at least for the first few chapters. Maybe the best way to address this would be for the publisher to supplement the "answers to selected exercises" found in the text with a slightly more detailed solutions guide on their website.

Altogether though, this is a well written text. The layout of the pages leaves adequate room for sufficiently detailed marginalia. It contains a number of tables and figures that are well worth tabbing for future reference and the questions, exercises, and research problems are an outstanding guide for a student who is serious about learning the material.

Although I didn't enjoy the class

Although I didn't enjoy the class, the textbook itself was pretty easy to read and read in a fairly conversational tone. I particularly enjoyed that aspect of it. That being said, the exercises at the end of each chapter were HORRIBLE and almost impossible to solve without a lot of prior knowledge of conversions and electricity. I wouldn't recommend it as a textbook for a 1000 level class like the one I was in, but maybe a 2 or 3000 level class where the students already have strong quantitative skills that will assist them in applying the concepts learned in the book.

Pretty good book

Pretty good book, I used it for an environmental studies class and it explained many concepts very well. The only issue would be the math problems at the end of each chapter. It would be good to have a table with conversions there with the problems so that I don't have to search through the book to find the proper conversion, but it is manageable. Overall, pretty good and you'll know more about the different types of energy sources and issues facing the environment.

Grade 3 Up In this collection of 14 ``Poems for Two Voices'' about insects, Fleisch man surpasses its companion volume, I Am Phoenix (Harper, 1985). He has com bined the elements of sound and meaning to create clear, lively images of a variety of insects. Elements of repetition, ono matopoeia, and alliteration are effectively used to create a character for each of these creatures, with fireflies ``Flickering, flitting, flashing'' and mayflies ``lying, dy ing,'' which make these poems a joy for reading aloud. In addition, elements of personality, both fictional and real, are presented with charming effect. The love lorn moth who yearns for the lightbulb and the book lice who overcome their differing ``tastes'' represent the lighter side, while the digger wasp's reflection on the home it digs for children it will never see and ``Re quiem,'' written for the victims of ``Fall's first killing frost,'' represent real beha viors. Beddows uses personified black- and-white drawings to capture the feeling of the poems, including a sultry queen honeybee reclining on her couch. This book can join Bugs (Viking, 1976) by Mary Ann Hoberman and Never Say Ugh! to a Bug (Greenwillow, 1979) by Norma Farber as proof that insects are indeed the stuff of poetry. Refreshing poetry

Here are fourteen poems about, of all things, bugs. Some may wonder at the subject matter; some may be disgusted. By the time you're done reading them, however, I'm sure you'll no longer feel that way.
Speaking of fireflies, book lice, and honeybees, Fleischman shows the unique perspective of each. At times his poems are hilarious, with the worker ant complaining in time to the languid satisfaction of the queen; some are poignant enough to touch your heart and make you think twice about that caterpillar you shuddered at the other day.
What makes these poems truly wonderful, however, is the fact that they are "for two voices". For full effect, they *must* be read aloud by two people, sometimes in chorus, sometimes speaking alone, and other times echoing each other. In such a manner, the already-delightful poetry becomes alive.

An original idea

These poems about the lives of different insects are meant to be read by two voices, thereby mimicking the sounds or characteristics of those bugs. The book works rather well, especially the whirligig beetle poem. Appearing in bookstores nation wide in 1992, I remember being given this book at the age of 10 from my mother. At that particular age I was not interested in participating in a picture book, clearly designed for younger students. Had I received it at a younger age I think I would have liked it more. I would recommend presenting this book to a group of students, having them perform it together. That would be the best use of this singular text.

Thoughtful novella about new beginnings

It is unusual for me to pick up a novella, but the blurb intrigued me. First off, this is a shorter story but packed with action, twists and turns and two well-developed characters. Though cheating is certainly a hot-button subject for me, the story was thought-provoking: what if? can something like that happen to me? With a few decades under my belt life is not always so clear-cut and this novella had food for thought. Add some hot scenes and it made a pretty entertaining read. Well edited too.

Wonderful Read! I wish this would have been a full length novel, I'm usually don't buy short reads, but this is brilliantly written and the characters are well developed and complex, steamy sex scene, oh, did I forget, love.

10 Second Interview: A Few Words with Patrick Rothfuss

Q: Were you always a fan of fantasy novels?
A: Always. My first non-picture books were the Narnia Chronicles. After that my mom gave me Ihe Hobbit and Dragonriders. I grew up reading about every fantasy and sci-fi book I could find. I used to go to the local bookstore and look at the paperbacks on the shelf. I read non-fantasy stuff too, of course. But fantasy is where my heart lies. Wait... Should that be "where my heart lays?" I always screw that up.

Q: Who are some of your favorite authors? Favorite books?
A: Hmmm.... How about I post that up as a list?

Q: What are you reading now?
A: Right now I'm reading Capacity, by Tony Balantyne. He was nominated for the Philip K Dick award this last year. I heard him read a piece of the first novel, Recursion, out at Norwescon. I picked it up and got pulled right in. Capacity is the second book in the series. Good writing and cool ideas. Everything I've like best.

Q: How did Kvothe's story come to you? Did you always plan on a trilogy?
A: This story started with Kvothe's character. I knew it was going to be about him from the very beginning. In some ways it's the simplest story possible: it's the story of a man's life. It's the myth of the Hero seen from backstage. It's about the exploration and revelation of a world, but it's also about Kvothe's desire to uncover the truth hidden underneath the stories in his world. The story is a lot of things, I guess. As you can tell, I'm not very good at describing it. I always tell people, "If I could sum it up in 50 words, I wouldn't have needed to write a whole novel about it." I didn't plan it as a trilogy though. I just wrote it and it got to be so long that it had to be broken up into pieces. There were three natural breaking points in the story.... Hence the Trilogy.

Q: What is next for our hero?
A: Hmm..... I don't really believe in spoilers. But I think it's safe to say that Kvothe grows up a little in the second book. He learns more about magic. He learns how to fight, gets tangled up in some court politics, and starts to figure unravel some of the mysteries of romance and relationships, which is really just magic of a different kind, in a way.

Critics are already throwing around comparisons to some of the biggest names in fantasy, including George R. R. Martin, Tad Williams, the recently deceased Robert Jordan, and even Tolkien. They praise Rothfuss's fresh take on the genre's conventions, particularly a shifting narrative that keeps the action moving. At nearly 700 pages, The Name of the Wind isn't meant to be knocked off in a weekend. But readers who pick up Rothfuss now-and, according to critics, that won't be a small number-can say they knew him back when.

Good book with believable hero and plot

This book was full of surprises in both plot and pace. I enjoyed how it was told from a story telling stand point. The main character is actually telling his adventures to a chronicler and friend. Complete with pauses for bathroom breaks and comments. When I first started reading, I was a little confused on the "Day One" part of the title. It wasn't until the end when I realized it was day one of story telling. The main character was interesting. There were times I liked him, felt for him, and wanted to smack some sense into him. He isn't some perfect prince charming or born hero. He is a normal human (granted a smart one whose memory I envy for college classes) with faults.

However, I found a few issues that didn't work for me with this book. The pace is what almost killed me. The beginning hooked me in and I could barely put down the book. When the story telling begins, my attention started to dwindle to the point of I had to remind myself to keep going before I forgot important details. This happened frequently, fast action scenes then slow building ones. It made the story that much more realistic and helped explain how he got that way of thinking and stuff. Normally I don't care, but for some odd reason this book's slow periods couldn't keep my interest. I don't want to spoil anything, so I will just say that this cycle happens a few times and made this book longer for me to read than normal.

One thing that I just couldn't stand was "The Girl." I understand that this is taking place in his teenage years and hormones have a way of messing with your logic. But someone as smart as he should have caught on that she is just playing with him. And I still can't see what on earth made her so special to him. Maybe it is just me, but every time she popped up I had to resist the urge to skip a few pages.

All in all, it is a great book with a kind of sword and sorcery theme to it. I don't regret reading it, but I don't really care to read any more in the series.

First and foremost, a well-written tale.

Here's the thing you should really get about this book: Patrick Rothfuss can *write*. He's clever and knows how to turn a phrase. He narrates in such a way that the destination -- which, since the book is told in flashback, you already know -- is not as important as the journey. The plot does not move quickly or predictably, and yes, there are many "slow" spots that other readers have criticized as unimportant. But to me I just wanted to know what was going on with the characters, and didn't really care how long it took to get there. This book, and especially the next, are long novels that meander through various rich landscapes and characters, never hurrying to reach any notable crux. It's a good read first and foremost.

However, readers should be warned that, at this time, the third book in the series is not yet published and there is no publication date. Apparently Rothfuss is methodical, and doesn't churn out novels at as rapid a pace as other authors, so it may yet be a while before the series is resolved with a third (and possibly a fourth) book. I don't mind that there is more to look forward to, although of course it is hard to wait.

Rothfuss's writing is beautiful and almost poetic at times

This book reminds me of a contemporary greek epic/tragedy. Kvothe is nearly infallible and naturally gifted at everything, which a lot of reviewers have mentioned as a fault in the book. However, this did not bother me in the least. I pictured Kvothe as Achilles or Odysseus, with flaws that lie in his character and circumstances rather than attributes. Rothfuss's writing is beautiful and almost poetic at times. He is insightful and the characters come to life (in fact the cameo characters, particularly Kvothe's parents, are some of my favorite in the book because they feel so real). Along with Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archives, this is at the top of the list in my favorite recent fantasy novels. Highly recommended.

I have been teaching from this book and previous versions for years

I have used other books such as Element K. The problem with most of the other texts on this subject is that they give you more information than is necessary. Mike Myers gives very concise, easy to read information.
If you want to pass the CompTIA tests, and more important, get good overall knowledge about the IT world, this is the book for you!

All you need to pass, but you need some pre-understanding of computers

This is a great study book and highly recommend all of Mike Meyer's Passport books. After completing certifications for SSCP, CISSP, and Net+, and after reading a plethera of other books, these are hands down my favorite. These books are meant to be portable, so you can carry them with you. They are too the point, unlike many study books I have read that seem to waste hundreds of pages filling the book with useless infomation. Do I really need an explanation of what a mouse and keyboard is? Do I need to know what the power button does? CISSP books are very bad for this (Shon Harris being the worst offender). These books are bare bones data you need to know. That being said, all these books assume you have some sort of competitance with a computer. If you can upgrade your RAM, connect a router, or change out a graphics card, your good with this book. It must also be noted that this book is considerably thicker than prior editions; about 3x. This makes it a bit less portable. Also the Net+ book covers a bit more indepth on the networking side which may feel absent in this book. Over all the Comptia A+, Net+ and Sec+ are relatively simply exams and straight forward. You honestly don't need anymore than this book.

I have yet to take the test to certify, but I have confidence that this book has properly prepared me to pass it. The writing style is easy to read and even humorous at times. There is a Ton of information here, but its not too overwhelming. I like the short reviews and quizzes at the end of each chapter. The CD-Rom with the practice tests is also very helpful. This softcover book is a nice compact-ish size (about half the footprint of a full size textbook, although its still close to a thousand pages in total length.) There are quite a few black/white pictures. I bought the book because it appeared to cover the same stuff as some of the other choices but cost less. I am completely satisfied with this purchase.
