The art tells as many stories as the text does

This book is full of drama, personality, and fun.
The cover is already an adventure, showing off the artist's rich color palette and marvelous use of black. Even the front matter of the book is artful - the fox appears on the copyright / dedication spread and on the title page, where he gazes down a lane of trees at Snow White hanging dwarfish clothes on a line. Then the story begins with a wealth of drama and detail. On the first page we see the young, yearning queen, the nurse pouring tea behind her, the blood drops on the snowy sill, her embroidery, her open sewing box, a triptych of the Virgin, and a hawk. The accompanying text tells of the queen giving birth and then dying. Next spread we meet the new wife and the Mirror. The new queen is already witchlike, surrounded by black candles and dried herbs and holding a black kitten. She is haughty and self-satisfied, and exuding menace. We realize that the story is about the deadly power of envy.
As the story progresses we savor the rich colors and the fabulous details as the illustrations deepen and elaborate on the text. For instance, we see the huntsman wracked with guilt and doubt - he's human - and we fully understand from this drawing why he releases her, on peril of his own death. We see that Snow White is often accompanied by the same hawk that appeared with her mother -- is it the spirit of her mother? In the cottage, where we're treated to a wealth of detail (reminding me of Jan Brett's Goldilocks) of wonderful wood carving and patchwork quilts, she falls asleep. The dwarfs arrive and the illustration of them peering, in all their gnarly ancient earthiness, at her pale innocence, is so delightful - one of them removes his cap. There are many more delights, including the witch's dressing table, which is like a dark take-off on a normal ladies' toilette.
In addition to the detail and color, the pacing of the book is very effective - what the artist has chosen to illustrate and how the drawings flow and shape the story.
This rendition shows that children's books can be works of art, but they are above all else stories, and the art can tell many stories just as the text can.

I've loved this edition since I was a child. Too bad it's out of print. The layout for the cover of the newer edition is not as elegantly done. Trina Schart Hyman was one in a million and will be greatly missed.

There are separate chapters for each type of instrument, allowing the reader to easily locate information. The book contains tables of measurements of Stradivari's forms and patterns, over 100 black and white photographs and drawings, and colour photographs of 16 of Stradivari's most important violins, violas, and cellos.

A mind-gripping story of the Battle of the Atlantic

This book is simply excellent. The protagonist is not some matinee-idol Navy captain, but a chubby Dutch tugboat master who is pressed into service, along with his huge tug and green crew, as a rescue ship in the Atlantic convoy routes. De Hartog's characters are some of the most believeable I have ever encountered, and the emotional impact of the book hits at gut-level. It is a complex but easily readable story. Anyone who loves books about men and the sea will be right at home with this one, and war buffs will be fully satisfied. I've read the book four times, and writing this review makes me want to read it again!

One of the greatest novels ever written.

Superficially, The Captain is a very well written novel about life aboard a sea-going tugboat pressed into service as an escort vessel for convoys to Brtitain in the early days of World War II. Read at this level, The Captain is a rousing, highly-readable adventure story with interesting, well-developed characters. But there is much more than rousing adventure to this book which skillfully probes many deeply-fundamental matters, including the horrors of war and the true nature of human courage. In my opinion, this is one of the most greatest novels ever written.

a MUST-READ for Merchant Marine vets

My Dad was a US Merchant Marine skipper in WWll, a veteran of the Murmansk and Arkhangelsk runs. He loved this book so much he read it every year. And he made sure his kids read it, so that we would understand. This book contains a harrowing fictionalized account of the most disasterous, ill-fated North Atlantic convoy, PQ-17. Told from the first-person, the protagonist is the young Dutch Captain of an ocean-going tug, which served as a rescue-vessel in the Allied convoy formation. All of Jan De Hartog's books about the sea are excellent. It's a shame so many are out-of-print. This one is my favorite. If you can find a copy through one of Amazon's affiliates or auctions, or even at the public library, grab it and savor it!
